Tell us a little more about how Manteaux Manteaux started.
Well, the company was founded by my father, Harold Perlman, in 1987, where he opened his first store in the East end of Montreal. He had always been in the retail clothing business.
He was a buyer for a national womenswear company where he made his career, and he left at the age of 45 to start something on his own.
A friend of his had given him the idea one night and had said “there’s no specialty coat stores.” He ran with that idea. I joined him a few years later, and from there the business grew one store at a time to where we are today — at 32 stores in most of the major shopping centers in Quebec, 5 in the Ottawa area, and one in Sudbury.
There are employees that have been with Manteaux Manteaux since its inception almost 40 years ago. That’s very strong retention, what’s the formula for that?
It’s true we do have a lot of people that have been here for many, many years. But it’s not just one thing.
We try to have a lot of open communication — we make people not just feel like they are involved but actually be involved. We encourage a lot of participation.
We value their input so much, and they have such an impact in the decisions made. It’s not only good business, but it creates a sense of ownership that I think draws people to the company and provides them a reason to stay.
